What the FE electrical exam costs, retakes included
Each attempt at the FE Electrical and Computer exam is $225, paid to NCEES, as of Oct 2026. Your state board may add its own application fee. Because not everyone passes the first time, the realistic exam bill is the fee times the attempts you can expect, worked out below from this discipline’s pass rates.

Two things move your own number. A recent graduate of an EAC/ABET program starts from a better first-attempt rate than the all-taker figure used here (pass rates). And a retake passes far less often than a first attempt, so money spent on preparation before attempt one is cheaper than a second $225 fee.
Also count the clock: one attempt per testing window means a fail costs you at least the rest of a quarter.
Preparation costs specific to E&C
- Practice exams from the exam’s owner: two volumes for this discipline, 2 × 50 questions, $50 each as of Oct 2026, built on the July 2020 specification (NCEES store).
- Review books: prices change often, so check the seller, and make sure the edition follows the July 2020 outline. The titles candidates look for are on the study guide.
- Calculator: one approved model that you already use for complex numbers. If yours is not on the list, buying one is part of the bill (approved models).
- The FE Reference Handbook: free in MyNCEES, and no personal copy is allowed in the exam, so there is nothing to buy.
