FE Civil exam facts: pass rate, length, scoring

The latest civil pass rate is 66%, but that number covers only one group of candidates. Across the 2025 fiscal year repeat takers passed at 32%, about half the 61% of first-timers. Below are the rate in context, the length of the appointment, how scoring works and the retake rules, each with its NCEES source in the table.

Pass rate

Who the headline number counts: first-time takers from EAC/ABET programs who sat within 12 months of graduating. That is the group NCEES posts on its FE page.

The same population, half-year by half-year (55–68%):

  • 55% of 3,540 (Jul–Dec 2022)
  • 66% of 5,701 (Jan–Jun 2023)
  • 59% of 1,621 (Jul–Dec 2023)
  • 65% of 5,622 (Jan–Jun 2024)
  • 64% of 3,702 (Jul–Dec 2024)
  • 68% of 5,858 (Jan–Jun 2025)
  • 63% of 4,116 (Jul–Dec 2025)
  • 66% of 6,247 (Jan–Jun 2026)

Spring halves are the big graduating cohorts and pass more often; the smaller July–December groups run several points lower. Earlier halves are read from archived copies of the NCEES exam page.

Everyone, one fiscal year: the annual Squared report counts all takers from October 2024 to September 2025. First-time takers passed at 61% (64% with an EAC/ABET bachelor’s degree), repeat takers at 32% (34% with the same degree). A year earlier the two rates were 60% and 33%. Do not set the half-year rate against the fiscal-year repeat rate; they measure different groups over different periods.

In the January–June 2026 half, civil had the lowest first-time rate of the five FE disciplines on this site, two points under Chemical at 68%; FE Other Disciplines was lower still at 61%. All seven side by side: FE pass rates.

How hard it is, in practice

Breadth is the difficulty: 14 sections, each with its own Handbook pages, in one sitting. What the numbers say:

  • A repeat attempt passes about half as often as a first one: prepare for the first sitting as if it were the only one.
  • If you fail, the diagnostic report breaks your result down by topic, which is your retake plan; a passing candidate never sees a score.
  • The retake rules are in the table. The windows are calendar quarters, so a fail in March means a retake in April at the earliest, and your board may be stricter.

The study guide turns the section ranges into a study plan.

How long the exam is

Plan for a 6 h appointment: a short agreement and tutorial, 5 h 20 min of questions and a 25 min break between the halves. Only the questions run on the exam clock, so a break you take outside the scheduled one costs you answering time.

Passing score

Not published. NCEES scales your count of right answers and compares it with a fixed standard; no percentage target exists. Sites that quote "70%" or a set number of correct answers are guessing. Because a wrong answer costs nothing, never leave a question blank.

Dates and results

NCEES sets no national test dates: you book any open seat, and the quarterly windows in the table matter only for retakes. You learn pass or fail by email within days. How to book, and what your board may require first: registration.

Units and the Handbook

Civil problems use both unit systems, so practice both. The only reference is the on-screen NCEES Handbook, and the FE supplies no design standards; the chapters a civil candidate uses are mapped on reference handbook for civil.

Questions people ask

Is there a set percentage to pass the FE Civil?

No. NCEES publishes no cut score: your right answers are scaled and measured against one fixed standard, whichever form you get.

How long is the FE Civil exam?

The appointment is 6 h, of which 5 h 20 min is the exam itself, for 110 questions.

Is the FE Civil the hardest FE exam?

Not by pass rate: FE Other Disciplines was lower in the same half-year. Of the five disciplines on this site civil was lowest; see FE pass rates.
